Arizona CDA Reflections
Fall, 2009

My Dear Sisters,

Just as the children have enjoyed their summer and
now are back to work in schools across the state,
it is now time for us to regroup and start anew.

On Sunday Oct 11, we celebrate Rosary Sunday in Phoenix. This is an awe-inspiring experience to share with 5000 fellow Catholics praying the rosary to our Blessed Lady. Mary is our exemplar and so I would love to show her our support by having a large group of Catholic Daughters from all over Arizona in attendance. For those attending Rosary Sunday, I would ask that all officers wear your robes for the procession and non-officer members to wear white please.

The following Sunday October 18, is CDA Sunday please plan something special to celebrate with your court.

I had the great pleasure recently to join with Peg Chew, Terri Toscano, and Janice Swiebicki to present a 2nd place award for Poetry to our very own beloved Louise Bates, past State Regent. You will find her lovely poem in this issue of our newsletter. And at our Sept board meeting I was thrilled to present once again the 1st place award for our wonderful Arizona State Newsletter to our great editor Delma. Way to go Delma!

We will have a busy fall and exciting 2010 as we look forward to planning and working on our Habitat build, There will be many things to do that will take many hands and feet to accomplish. For those who aren’t able to physically work on the house we will ask for your prayers for the success and safety during the building of our house. But first and foremost, we have the job of selling our raffle tickets. We need everyone to support and work on this effort and I know that it will be it a big success. I know I have a great team in all my 16 courts and I Thank you all in advance for a job well done!

In the summer issue of the newsletter, there was a brief bio of your new board members--Maureen, Trudi and JoAnn and so I thought it only fair that this issue have some information about your State Chaplain and State Regent.

I was born Susan Louise Beatty on Groundhogs Day 1947 in Bellevue, Pa a suburb of Pittsburgh, GO STEELERS AND PENGUINS! My father worked for Alcoa and my mother was a nurse. I was the 5th of 6 children and the only girl. I attended Assumption Catholic School, then St. Benedict's Academy. After high school I followed in my mother's footsteps and graduated in 1967 from Point Park College school of Nursing in Pittsburgh. After 4 years at St Francis Hospital, I transferred to Suburban General where my mother worked and started work in Labor and Delivery. I moved in 1974 to Arizona with my 2 year-old son Christopher because my parents were retiring there. I worked, for the next 30 years at Desert Samaritan Hospital (now Banner Samaritan) in Mesa in their labor and Delivery department as it grew from 80 babies a month to over 700 a month. I retired from the hospital in Nov 2004.

In 1978,1 again followed my mother by becoming a chartered member of CD of A, Our Lady of the Desert #2164. My mother and grandmother both were 50+ years as Catholic Daughters and my mother Jean Beatty served several offices on the Az State Board. Her dream was to see me as State Regent, so here I am Mom!

In 1979, I met my best friend, and love of my life. In Feb 1980, Christopher and I married Douglas Mone' and the following January we all excitedly welcomed Amy Marie Mone' to our family. Chris is now living in Colorado with his beautiful wife Jennifer and our adorable grandson Cole who is 6 months old. Amy lives here in Mesa with our other adorable grand children, 7 year-old Kasey and 18-month-old Cheyenne who I get to enjoy almost daily as Nana and babysitter.

May God hold you and your families in the palms of His hands.

Susan Moné
Arizona State Regent

My dear Catholic Daughters

We begin a new era in the Arizona Catholic Daughters with a new group of State Officers. I am the only one that was not changed. Now we know that God has humor. Ha! Ha! Ha l All joking aside, I am very happy and pleased that Susan Moné the State Regent has asked me to stay on as the State Chaplain of the Arizona State Catholic Daughters. Thank you!

A little about me, I was born on April 13,1970 in Tucson, Arizona. I am a native. I was born into a family of 8, 5 brothers and 3 sisters. We had a house full. At home we spoke Spanish and at school we learned English. I graduated from Sunny Side High School in 1988, studied pre-med at the U of A for three years and then entered the seminary college in 1991. In seminary formation I studied Philosophy, Theology, and was formed to the priesthood in all aspects of life. I moved on in the seminary to graduate studies and was ordained in 2000 for the Diocesan priesthood In Tucson by Bishop Manuel Moreno. I was assigned to St. Ambrose In Tucson for a year and a haf, and then I was assigned to St Christopher as Pastor.

In 2006, Delma Araiza, the past State Regent, invited me to be the Chaplin of the Catholic Daughters. Not too familiar with the Catholic Daughters, I trusted in the Lord and said yes. I am happy that I did say yes to be the chaplain, because I have had great experiences finding what and who the Catholic Daughters are in the Church. I look forward to continued work with the Catholic Daughters and the great work we do for the Church and the people in need.

In this year of the Priest, please pray for me and all priests and those called to the priesthood. Thank you for all you do as Catholic Daughters. Let us continue to work together for unity and charity as Catholic Daughters. Be assured of my prayers for you and your families. May God Bless you!

Editors Note:

Webmaster's note:

Summer is just about over and school has started again.
Summer vacation is also over for our local courts and
It is time once again to begin our meetings with a spiritual
renewal, intense enthusiasm and look forward to new projects
of each individual court. Most courts take a couple of month
s off during the summer, but we all are aware, the work of the
Catholic Daughters has continued.

Susan Mone, State Regent, alone with Maureen O'Reilly-O'Shea,
First Vice State Regent, JcAnn Kersbergen, State Secretary and
State Chaplain Fr. Abran Tadeo, attended the State Officers' Conference in Belleville, Illinois. It was an awesome weekend of spirituality, sharing our love with one another, being creative and having a great time together. Even though we were having fun, it was also a lot of work and a tremendous learning experience. Presentations were mixed with skits, hands on experiences and a lot of laughter. Everyone received the first draft of the revised Tools of the Trade Procedure Handbook, along with the latest updates and changes in all our programs and contests. They also had the opportunity to meet and interact with State Officers from other states. Congratulations to the Arizona State Court; the State Newsletter won first place in the 2009 National Newsletter Contest Thanks to all the newsletter winners for your participation.

This summer Fr. Abran, Deacon Joe Bougushefsky and two volunteers from Marana, AZ, volunteers for Project 2416, drove 1500 miles to Sugar Land, Texas to collect the left over items from a garage sale which included clothes, house hold items, toys, and non perishable food donated by the Catholic Daughters of my home court, Court St. Theresa of Lisieux, 2211, of Sugar Land, TX..

Members of the Catholic Daughters, Knights of Columbus and the Squires Circle packed boxes and plastic bags with clothes, toys and house hold items. There were enough items to completely fill a sixteen foot truck. Fr. Abran and his volunteers then drove back to Marana, AZ. to deliver the garage sale items to the deportation center in Nogales, Mexico.

It is time again to set a date with, your district deputy tb set up your court's Financial Review.  This will cover the period of April 1, 2009 to  Seember 30, 2009, and must be held in October with your district deputy present. The reports are due to the State and National offices by November 1, 2009. Please be sure to fill out the form completely and include, in the space provided, the number of members in your court.

Let's not keep the Catholic Daughters "the biggest secret" in our church and community. Speak to all Catholic women, so that they may hear the word of the Catholic Daughters and join our Order. This will give us the strength in numbers to accomplish all of our goals.

Til next time, keep our bishops, priests, deacons, Women religious
and all Catholic Daughters in your prayers.

God bless you and your families.

PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM IMMEDIATE PAST NATIONAL REGENT - CLAUDIA R. BOSCH
My -dear Catholic Daughters,
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you that showered me with cards, flowers, prayers and get well wishes following my surgery. I had bilateral knee surgery on January 19. Since both knees required replacement, I selected to do them both at the same time, because I was afraid if I only did one, I may not go back to do the other. Guess what - I was right, I wouldn't have. I'm not dancing yet but I am doing well. My doctor said I'm way ahead of schedule in my recovery, and I assured him it was due to the Catholic Daughter prayers. I truly believe in the power of prayer and this I experienced. Thank you all so much - I love you.
Claudia R. Bosch
Immediate Past National Regent.

PRAYERS
Please add the names of Eunice and Ralph Riles to your prayer lists. They have both been hospitalized recently for health problems. You can send cards to Eunice Riles, Past National Regent, 9888 Kinglet Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70809

Being a Christian Is No Easy Task, Admits the Pope
Says Christ's Teachings Still Cause Scandal
CARTEL GRANDOLFO, ITALY, Aug. 23, 2009 (Zenit.org) -
It is not easy being a Christian today, just as it wasn't in Christ's time, since the Lord asks believers to swim against the current in following his teachings says Benedict XVI.  The Pope affirmed this today in an address to crowds gathered at the Papal summer residence in Castel Grandolfo for the praying of the midday Angelus. The Holy Father was reflecting on the Gospel reading from St. John for the daily mass, which describes how many of Christ's followers abandoned him because of his affirmation, "If you do not eat of the flesh of the Son of man or drink of his blood, you shall not have life within you." "Jesus, however, does not soften his statements." the Pontiff noted. "{I}ndeed, he turns to the Twelve directly and asks:"Do you also wish to leave?" Benedict XVI contends that this "provocative question" is not just for the Apostles, but also for believers of "every age." "Today too," he said, "not a few scandalized by the paradox of the Christian faith. Jesus' teaching seems "hard", too difficult to put into practice. There are those who reject it and abandon Christ; there are those who try to 'adapt' the word to the fashion of times, distorting its meaning and value. Pointing to Peter, who was the first Pope, reiterated his adhesion to Christ in the name of the Apostles, Benedict XVI said that "we too can repeat Peter's answer, aware of course of our human fragility, but confident in the power of the Holy Spirit, who expresses himself and manifests himself in communion with Jesus." "FAITH is a gift of God to man and it is, at the same time, man's free and total entrusting of himself to God, " he added. "Faith is the docile listening to the word of the Lord, that is the 'lamp' for our steps and the 'light' on our way. "If we open our hearts to Christ with confidence, if we let ourselves be conquered by him, we too can experience, together with the Cure d'Ars, 'that our only happiness on this earth is to love God and to know that he loves us."' " Let us ask the VIRGIN MARY." the Pope concluded, "always to keep alive in us this faith impregnated by love, which made her, the humble girl of Nazareth, Mother of God an model for all believers."

POPE BENEDICT XVI DECLARES "YEAR FOR PRIESTS"
In March, Pope Benedict XVI declared a "Year for Priests" beginning with the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 19th, 2009, This new Jubilee Year will conclude in Rome with an international gathering of priests with the Holy Father on June 19, 2010. The following are excerpts from the Address of His Holiness Benedict XVI to the Members of the Congregation for the Clergy on the Occasion of their Plenary Assembly Monday March 16th, 2009: " The missionary dimension of the priesthood is bom from the priest's sacramental configuration to Christ. As a consequence it brings and total adherence to what the ecclesial tradition has identified as apostolica vivendi forma. This consists in participation in a "new life" spiritually speaking, in that "new way of life" which the Lord Jesus inaugurated and which the Apostles made their own. Through the imposition of the Bishops hands and the consecratory prayer of the Church, the candidates become new men, they become " presbyters." In this light it is clear that the tria munera are first a gift and only consequently an office, first a participation in a life, and hence a potestas. Of course, the great ecclesial tradition has rightly separated sacramental efficiency from the concrete existential situation of the individual priest and so the legitimate expectations of the faithful are appropriately safeguarded. However, this correct doctrinal expectation takes nothing from the necessity, indeed indispensable, aspiration to moral perfection that must dwell in every authentically priestly heart. The Priest's mission as a theme of the Plenary Assembly emphasizes, is carried out "in the Church". This ecclesial communal, hierarchial and doctrinal dimension is absolutely indispensable to every authentic mission and along guarantee its spiritual effectiveness. The four aspects mentioned must always be recognized as intimately connected: the mission "ecclesial" because no one proclaims himself in the first person, but within and through his own humanity every priest must be well aware that he is bringing to the world Another God himself. God is the only treasure which ultimately people desire to find in a priest. The mission is'communional" because it is carried out in a unity and communion that only secondly has also important aspects of social visibility. The priest is called to be an expert, so that he may be able to lead the souls entrusted to him humbly and trustingly to the same encounter with the Lord."

If you are interested, give her a call, and she will be glad let you know what you have to do to get one. Regent Parra, is working on setting up a Pilgrimage to the missions in Sonora, Mexico. The date for the pilgrimage is yet to be set. In addition, the court will hold their 3rd Annual Christmas choir festival. Featured again will be the Choir from St Simon & Jude from Phoenix. (Ed. Note: This is the same wonderful group who entertained us at the State Convention. They are a great group!)

Ct. Madonna # 2067 - Sun City
Vee Dietrick, Financial Secretary, says their court is just gearing up for the 2009-2010 year. The court is planning their Annual Fashion Show to be held Feb 15, 2010. Plans are also being formulated for their Second Annual Women's Retreat to be held March 8, 2010. Their September meeting will feature a guest speaker who is the Facilitator for the Hearing Impaired. 2nd Place Winner
Louise Bates, Past State Regent
The following is the poem submitted by Louise E. Bates from Ct. Madonna #2067 to the National Education Contest:
The Gifts I Give to Others
God gave Himself to all of us
when he died upon the tree.
He wants us to follow Him,
Our wills, He made them free.
His wants are simple, our love, our prayers.
No fame .... No fee
So. .. The gifts I give to others?
My love, my prayers-and me.

The Big Picture
Pencil to Paper.
A swooping arch of lead.
Imagination becomes reality.
Lines connecting, intersecting,
to form something bigger.

The rush of of knowing you've created something new.
The life of an artist
This is God's Gift in my life.
